This workshop will allow you to deepen your knowledge and skills in a shop forge, while learning how to forge one of the most basic tools of the blacksmith's trade: the hammer! With many different weights and shapes depending on the task, hammers are varied and it is extremely useful to know how to forge them yourself. In this workshop, you will learn how to forge your own hammer: forge the head into the shape you need, calculate the density of the material, balance your hammer, fit it into the right position, and do the finishing touches!

Level: intermediate

Prerequisites : to have followed our workshop Introduction to traditional blacksmithing and Introduction to Knifemaking.

Duration: two days, from 9am to 5pm

Minimum age : 18 years

Cost : 750+ taxes

Places per workshop : 6

Other details: Bring a lunch and a bottle of water; a fridge and a microwave will be at your disposal. Please wear natural clothing (jeans, cotton...) and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. All tools will be provided on site.

  • Become familiar with the calculation of the volumic mass of metal for forging steel or iron parts
  • Make a hammer head in the desired shape 
  • Balancing the weight of a hand tool
  • Creating a wooden handle and fitting a hammer 
  • Doing a heat treatment 
  • Master the basic techniques of traditional blacksmithing and carving
  • Creation of a custom-made hammer
